You will join the South Puget Sound Region as the Spillman Assistant Fire Management Officer. This position will be responsible for the Spillman Unit fire suppression staffing, supervising 2 permanent fire techs, and 18 seasonal staff members. This role supports community fire prevention and resiliency, fire preparedness, training, suppression, and regulation by developing and directing staff to perform tasks supporting this work. You will work in coordination with region DNR staff, fire departments, and other state and federal agencies. As a member of region fire leadership, with a commitment to Wildland Core Values of Duty, Respect and Integrity, you will have an opportunity to operate within and continue building the region’s fire program, while creating an environment that promotes safety, high standards, and critical and innovative thinking. Spillman Unit sits in the foothills of the Olympic mountains, with easy access to natural and scenic landscapes. The hood canal, lake Cushman, Puget Sound and Tahuya state forest are all within the unit, making It desirable for tourism. South Puget sound region also has convenient access to shopping centers, sports arenas, gyms, as well as countless restaurants. Responsibilities: • Implementing fire unit operations plan • Developing permanent staff to lead critical positions in the suppression program, and develop seasonal hiring plans • Planning and developing annual fire training plans for unit employees • Working with the FMO, Division, and other agency partners, continuing to develop and implement Wildfire Ready Neighbors, Firewise and Fire Adapted Community Programs. • Working within cooperative agreements with other agencies to support mutual aid for training and suppression activities • Coordinating and maintaining the unit’s state-owned equipment inventory system • Participating in wildland fire suppression assignments in region and out-of-region • Serving as an incident commander on Type 3, 4 and 5 wildland fires within the unit and region • Writing, and reviewing incident reports, narratives and investigation reports. • Assigning and implementing unit fire prevention activities, promoting fire safety awareness • Implementing the fire unit’s regulatory program • Providing required reviews of unit Forest Fire Protection Assessments (FFPA) as directed by FMO • In all tasks, considering the Risk Management Process, especially in high pressure or fast-paced situations to ensure sound and timely decisions.
