Fire fighter/ EMT

The Town of Mount Desert, Maine has an opening for full-time Firefighter/Paramedic, beginning April

6, 2026. The Mount Desert Fire Department is a combination department with call company

Firefighters/EMT’s and full-time staff. We serve a year-round community of just over 2000, that

increases substantially with seasonal summer residents and visitors. MDFD averages +/-600 calls

per year. The department operates out of 3 fire stations, 2 of which have recently undergone major

renovations and expansion. This skilled position will include the general duties of firefighting and

Emergency Medical Services.

General Duties: The Full Time Firefighter/Paramedic will be responsible for incident response,

apparatus operation and maintenance, report writing, fire ground operations and emergency

medical responses. Responsibilities also include daily station duties, which include equipment

and facilities maintenance, bi-weekly fire and/or medical training, fire prevention, medical

responses, and public relations. Full-time Firefighter/EMT’s will work 24-hour shifts, one on, one

off, one on, and five off, with an average 42-hour work week based on a 28-day work period.

Applicants must be at least 18 years of age, possess a high school diploma or equivalent, be able

to pass a background check, must be of good health and pass MDFD's physical & written tests,

possess a State of Maine Firefighter I & II certification level or equivalent, possess a current State

of Maine License Paramedic, and a AHA BLS card. ALS providers must have ACLS, PALS and PIFT.

Must have a valid driver‛s license issued by the State of Maine at time of application submittal.

Base pay is $29.7115 for Firefighter/Paramedic licensed with an increase to $31.3622 after a 6-

month probation period. An additional $3.08 hourly stipend is offered for FF/EMT-P licensing levels.
